Sheffield United v Portsmouth

I’ve been looking forward to this midweek clash at Bramall Lane, and I reckon we’re in for a proper battle tonight as Sheffield United host Portsmouth in what could be a crucial game for both these struggling sides.

The Blades come into this one with their tails up after that emphatic 3-0 victory over their bitter rivals Sheffield Wednesday in the Steel City derby on Sunday. Chris Wilder’s men absolutely dominated at Hillsborough, and I’m hoping they can use that momentum to kickstart their disappointing season.

Let me tell you, Sheffield United have been in a right mess this campaign. They’re currently sitting 22nd in the Championship table with just 13 points from 16 matches. Only 14 goals scored and a whopping 26 conceded tells the story of their struggles. But Sunday’s performance showed what they’re capable of when they click, and I’ve seen enough from them to believe they might just be turning a corner.

Portsmouth aren’t exactly flying either, but they’re in a slightly better position in 19th with 17 points. John Mousinho’s side also got a confidence-boosting win at the weekend, beating Millwall 3-1 to end a six-game winless run. That victory has given them a bit of breathing space above the drop zone, but they’ve been absolutely woeful on their travels this season.

Looking at the head-to-head, I’ve noticed Sheffield United have had the upper hand in recent meetings. They’ve won each of their last three home games against Pompey and claimed a 2-1 victory in this fixture back in February. The Blades have a superior record historically too, with 23 wins to Portsmouth’s 20 from their 52 previous encounters.

The key battle tonight will be whether Pompey can overcome their travel sickness – they’ve gone six away matches without a win in the league, losing three and drawing three. Meanwhile, Sheffield United’s home form has been dire too, failing to win seven of their last eight Championship games at Bramall Lane.

I reckon tonight comes down to which side can carry the momentum from their weekend victories. For me, the Blades’ emphatic derby win gives them the edge, and I’m backing Patrick Bamford to get on the scoresheet. He’s been showing glimpses of his quality in recent weeks, and I fancy him to make the difference tonight.

My Prediction: Sheffield United 2-0 Portsmouth with Bamford to score first and maybe grab another to make it a brace. The Blades will be too strong at home and should continue their good record against Pompey.

Let’s find out if I’m right! Drop me a comment after the game to let me know your thoughts.
