Sheffield United vs Oxford United

I’m looking forward to this Sunday’s clash at Bramall Lane as Sheffield United take on struggling Oxford United in what could be a crucial Championship encounter. The Blades are flying high after back-to-back wins, and I’m expecting them to continue this excellent run of form.

Chris Wilder’s men have been one of the most in-form sides in the Championship recently, collecting an impressive 22 points from their last 10 matches – the best record in the division during this period. It’s been quite the turnaround after their dismal start to the campaign, when they managed just 10 points from their first 15 outings.

The Blades kicked off 2026 in style with a commanding 3-1 victory over Leicester City on New Year’s Day, with Tanganga, Cannon, and O’Hare all finding the net. This followed an impressive 2-1 away win at Stoke City, with Riedewald and Cannon on the scoresheet.

I’ve been particularly impressed with Tom Cannon recently. The striker has scored in back-to-back games and looks to be finding his rhythm at just the right time. His movement in the box has been excellent, and I’m expecting him to cause problems for Oxford’s leaky defence.

Speaking of Oxford, they’re having a tough time of it this season. Currently sitting 23rd in the table and three points adrift of safety, the U’s have picked up just 22 points from their opening 25 games. They’ve failed to keep a clean sheet in their last 15 matches, which doesn’t bode well for their trip to South Yorkshire.

Craig Short remains in temporary charge following Gary Rowett’s dismissal, and while they did manage an impressive win against Southampton on Boxing Day, they’ve since lost to both Swansea City and Ipswich Town. The 2-1 defeat at Ipswich on New Year’s Day will have been particularly disappointing, with Will Lankshear’s equaliser ultimately counting for nothing.

Key Stats and Facts

I’ve done my homework on this clash, and here are some interesting stats I think you’ll want to know:

  • Sunday’s game will be the 33rd meeting between these two sides, with Sheffield United winning 17 and Oxford claiming 10 victories, with 5 draws.
  • The Blades have won six of their last seven matches against Oxford United.
  • Sheffield United have scored 25 goals in their last 10 matches – an impressive average of 2.5 per game.
  • Oxford have a terrible away record this season and has conceded in every one of their last 15 matches.
  • According to Opta’s expected league table, Sheffield United should be the third-best team in the Championship, while Oxford should be 20th.

Team News

The Blades might be without Tom Davies and Ben Mee as they continue to carefully manage their fitness. Sydie Peck is getting closer to a return but might be saved for the FA Cup tie against Mansfield.

Oxford have significant injury concerns with defenders Ben Davies and Hidde ter Avest doubtful, while midfielders Cameron Brannagan and Matt Phillips could also miss out. This leaves their already struggling squad stretched thin for this tough away fixture.

Players to Watch

I’m really excited to see Andre Brooks in action again after his outstanding performance against Leicester. His athleticism and ability to win the ball back immediately after losing it caused Leicester all sorts of problems. His speed and agility were on full display in the build-up to Cannon’s goal.

For Oxford, keep an eye on Will Lankshear. Despite their struggles, he’s shown he only needs one chance to make an impact. He ranks in the 77th percentile in the Championship for shot ratio, though he’s often been left isolated in recent weeks due to Oxford’s difficulties.

My Prediction

I’m backing the Blades to make it three wins in a row with a convincing 2-0 victory. Their confidence is sky-high after those wins against Stoke and Leicester, and they’re starting to look like genuine play-off contenders. Oxford’s defensive frailties should give Sheffield United plenty of opportunities, and I expect them to take advantage.

What do you think? Will Sheffield United continue their climb up the table, or can Oxford cause an upset? Let me know your predictions in the comments!
